Living in Brevard County means that we’re fortunate enough to enjoy spectacular weather all throughout the year. That isn’t to say, however, that temperatures don’t begin to dip as the seasons change. Throughout December, January, and February, temperatures in the Melbourne area reach an average low of 54°F and an average high of 71°F — not quite the comfortable enough climate you need to dip into an unheated pool. That’s why the swimming pool experts here at Always Clear Pool Cleaning & Repair in Central Brevard Country recommend equipping your pool with a heating system as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. With autumn fast approaching, there’s no better time to make you pool as comfortable as possible for year-round enjoyment.
If, like many of our clients, you already have a heating system installed in your inground swimming pool, there are still things you can do to improve the overall comfort, luxury, and cost-effectiveness of your pool. In this blog post, we explore the three main pool heating methods and explain how upgrading your pool heating system can save you money while increasing your enjoyment of your pool.

THE THREE POOL HEATING METHODS
When it comes to pool heating methods, there are three major types available: gas, solar, and electric (heat pump). Below, we go further in-depth about these three systems, and how upgrading to a heat pump can score you huge savings on your electric bill.
GAS POOL HEATERS
Gas pool heaters are available in either natural gas or liquid propane. Many people like gas pool heaters because they can maintain a constant water temperature in any weather condition. They can also heat a spa faster than any other heating method. Unfortunately, however, gas pool heaters come with high annual operating costs — as much as $3,000 a year.
SOLAR HEATING METHODS
There are two major ways to harness the natural power of the sun to warm your pool: solar heating panel and solar blankets. Solar heating panels work by harnessing the natural power of the sun to warm your pool. Typically, solar heating panels are mounted on the roof of your home or a rack by your swimming pool, depending on your aesthetic preference and the area that will get the most sunlight throughout the course of the day (usually a southern exposure). For the best performance and greatest heat gain, you’ll want at least 50% of your pool’s square footage in solar panels.
Solar heating panels are by far the least expensive and most eco-friendly method for heating your pool. After the initial purchase of the solar heating panels or solar blankets, there is no other cost. After the initial payback period, on average 2-2.5 years, you are essentially getting free heat! When you consider that the yearly cost of a gas pool heater can sometimes reach $3,000, that’s a BIG difference. Best of all, since Central Brevard County gets such high temperatures all year long, a solar method will probably be enough on its own to heat up your pool efficiently. The main downside of using thermal energy to heat your pool is that it works great during April through October, yet main winter months will not allow enough solar time with low am temps to get your pool heated to the temp you desire that is swimmable.
ELECTRIC HEAT PUMPS
Here at Always Clear Pool Cleaning & Repair, we love electric heat pumps! Heat pumps work like a reverse air conditioning unit, i.e. they transfer heat from the outside to your swimming pool via an evaporator coil and fan. This is perfect for a warm environment, like Florida. While the cost to purchase a pool heat pump can be higher than other methods, it will save you up to 80% of your heating costs in the long run when compared to a gas heater. On top of saving you money, electric heat pumps allow you to maintain a constant temperature throughout the entire day, are eco-friendly, and they don’t take up too much space.
